I first read an Advanced Review Copy of Sutherland's new book, Taking Up Serpents,a thriller featuring his cyber expert, Brody Taylor. Brody's life is in danger and his choices put also at risk his significant other, a detective who helps him through the thrilling dangers. I am not doing credit to this extremely well-written thriller/5. One book that is actually a shameful piece of scholarship is Weston LaBarre’s text, They Shall Take Up Serpents. LaBarre was an anthropologist who often presented his subjects in a condescending manner, and therefore he has no credibility for me.   Some of the best are Thomas Burton's Serpent Handling Believers, David Kimbrough's Taking Up Serpents, and Ralph Hood's and Paul Williamson's Them That Believe. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

Christ Jesus, "in the likeness of sinful flesh" (), was made sin for us (2Corinthians ), and thus fulfilled, as He Himself explained to Nicodemus, the type of the brazen serpent (John ).The meaning of this type, or "sign of salvation," is explained in the Book of Wisdom in these.   The serpent, a symbol of sin and judgment, was lifted up from the earth and put on a tree, which was a symbol of a curse (Galatians ). The serpent lifted up and cursed symbolized Jesus, who takes away sin from everyone who would look to Him in faith, just like the Israelites had to look to the upraised symbol in the wilderness. Pentecostals believe in exorcisms, speaking in new tongues, and laying hands on the sick; so why not taking up serpents? To an illiterate Tennessee preacher named George W. ("Little George. Snake handling, also called serpent handling, as a religious rite is observed in a small number of isolated churches, mostly in the United States, usually characterized as rural and part of the Holiness practice began in the early 20th century in Appalachia and plays only a small part in the church service. Participants are Holiness, Pentecostals, Charismatics, or other evangelicals.
